Computer Basics: Meaning and Characteristics of Computer

What is Computer?

A computer is a type of electronic equipment used to manipulate data or information. Data which can be stored, retrieved, and processed by it. You may already be aware of the fact that you can use a computer to surf the Internet, send emails, type documents, and play games. It can also be used to edit or make presentations, films, and spreadsheets.

The "Grand Father" of the computer is Charles Babbage. The acronym of Charles Babbage's initial mechanical computer was Analytical Engine. In this system, read-only information is stored on punch cards.

Characteristics of Computer

Computers have a variety of unique features and abilities. We should study more about the characteristics of contemporary computers in this blog in order to better understand them and transfer them to our children.

Your kids should be aware of the following important computer characteristics: diligence, automation, speed, and memory. Computers contain certain traits that enable logical task completion, and these traits have been further refined into what is currently known as Artificial Intelligence.

Speed

The user may acquire the essential information quickly and make the best decisions possible because of the computer's ability to process data and deliver results in fractions of a second. A powerful computer may perform around 3 million calculations per second.

Accuracy

The computer's precision is consistently high enough to prevent errors due to its quick processing. If errors exist, it is because the programmer provided inadequate instructions.

Reliable

If the software that provides instructions and the data that is supplied as input to the computer is accurate and reliable, the output that a computer produces is very reliable.

Storage Volume

Data retrieval is made easier and massive volumes of data can be stored thanks to the computer's ability to store enormous amounts of data on minuscule storage devices.

Automation

After receiving the commands, the computer starts working independently without any human input until the software has completed its task and meets the logical requirements to conclude the job.
